Bear Medicine: I tend to find myself working with....or being worked over by Bear whenever I haven't been paying attention to inner signals, intuition, or have been sick or stressed out. Whenever I need to know something about rest or healing it is Bear that appears and guides me through a journey of lessons I'm not likely to forget. Bear gives us lessons on our inner guidance system and reminds us to follow our natural cycles. By going with the flow, rather than against, it, energies align more positively and effectively. Sometimes bear appears in order to tell us to slow down physically, drop a few of the projects and just chill out for a season. A powerful symbol for the subconscious depths, the bear sometimes suggests getting off the main path and forging your own in your own way and time. The Animal Wise tarot compares bear with the Wheel of Fortune card which concerns cycles, awareness, patterns, and timing. The hint might be to stop or to go, you have to use your intuition to learn which. And to access your intuition you have to retire to your own 'cave' and hibernate for a spell before emerging with the answer. Remember that there is a time to retire and a time to emerge and be conscious enough to be able to know which is which and when to do it. Andrews says to ask yourself the following questions regarding bear energy. Is your judgment off? Are you ignoring your own instincts? Are you taking the time to enjoy the honey of your life? Jamie Sams, in her Medicine Cards, associates the bear with introspection which would be in the west (right brain, intuition) on the medicine wheel. It might be time to digest the year's events or a situation. Learn to slow down and attune to the Earth Mother's energies by entering the great void and seeking out the answers. Bears are great dream givers since they spend a great deal of time completely immersed in that level of reality. Sams says that Bear can lead us to the Council Chamber where we can get advice from our ancestors about our path. I thought, for the longest time, that bear was always serious. Then during a journey she tackled me and taught me how to play the game of pin the bear to the floor and tickle the bear to get loose. But once play time was over, she had no qualms about swatting me with those wonderful long nails of hers. And she will use those claws to rip things open so that she can see what is inside.
