The Importance of Journal Keeping

Apr 29, 2001 - © Cheryl D. Tracy

The inside of the cave was huge. I mean, you could put a whole house in there! And it was neat and tidy and smelled like all the herbs that were hanging from the walls and ceilings. The walls had shelves cut into them and those shelves were covered with books, jars, crystals, shells, leaves, and little hand carved figurines. Several stacks of books hugged one wall and I walked over to them, curious, and picked up the first one. The title was the Language of Trees, condensed version.

"You're dripping on my scrolls."

"I'm - " I looked down and saw the puddle gathering at my feet. "OOPS, sorry."

He handed me a towel and motioned me out of the way, and then tossed another towel on the puddle I'd made and moved the books and scrolls out of the way with his foot. Then he set up something that looked like a projector screen. "What do you see?"

I finished wiping my hair and studied the white screen. "Lines."

"Humph," he grunted. "Your eyes aren't working right yet." He handed me a silver goblet. "That should take care of it."

I gulped it down in one swig and handed it back. "Am I gonna turn into a frog now?"

"Only if you don't shut up."

I grinned.

"You wouldn't have this trouble with your vision if you came on a regular bases, you know," he scolded. "There may be no time here, but there certainly is on your level. Look at the screen again."

Obediently, I looked at the screen. It bubbled and swirled and I wondered if Merlin had given me some acid. Then the screen shifted and suddenly I could see a map.

"Okay, don't move," he ordered. I kept my eyes on the map, trying to place it. It almost looked like Maine, but not quite. There was brilliant flash and, for a moment, all I could see was big orbs of blue light. When my vision cleared again, Merlin held out a smaller version of the map. Somehow, he'd taken a snap shot of it.

"This is your Inner Landscape," he told me. "We are here, but here won't be here much longer because you are going to get a little antsy and change things."

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"Never mind," he brushed it away. "Just remember to record this journey so you when you forget, you can remember."

"Huh?"

"Never mind," he grinned. Then he rolled the paper
