You know what, leave Michael Jackson alone! Like millions of curious viewers I couldn't stay away from the 20/20 special the other night. But instead of being disturbed by Jacko's behavior I was more bothered by the slant 20/20 gave the show.
Yup, Michael Jackson is so childlike that sometimes you wonder if he's steeped in our reality. Yes, it's very strange to think of him as someone's dad. Yes, I believe he's one of very few adults who finds hanging out with kids more comfortable than being with adults. And, of course he's had more than 2 surgeries. But hey, if he wants to go through the rest of his life with that face - as my grandfather used to say, if he likes it I love it! To continue to drag him over the coals about things that are obviously just part of his personality seems cruel and has gotten stale. First of all, 20/20 acted as if they were actually revealing something we didn't already know. Oprah did this exact same show a few years ago without having to spend 8 months to figure it out!!! Second, despite how incredulous we may feel to his lifestyle, the fact is that Michael Jackson hasn't lived a normal life since he was about five years old. Why exactly are we expecting him to act "normal" now? As I watched the 20/20 special, it reinforced how much society enjoys knocking people off the very pedestal we put them on in the first place. Good old American values call for kicking a man while he's down and kick him good so he can stay down! Jacko is in the midst of the great cycle of fame. Doesn't he know, that he won't get truly positive press until he dies? Seriously, that's how we do. We love you, we hate you, we kick you while you're down and then when you die we remember how great you were and forgive any past transgressions. But let's get one thing straight, Michael Jackson wasn't duped into doing this special and 20/20 knew he wasn't going to reveal anything he didn't want to, over a period of 8 months or 8 years! The only stooges were the viewers. We helped them both to fulfill their respective goals - Michael to get the attention he obviously craves and ABC to score an uptick in ratings. Job well done! But one of the reasons I watched is because I'm still fascinated with Michael Jackson. I grew up with his music and he's a musical genius, period. His appearance disturbs me, but it has no bearing on his music, so live and let live. Go To Page: 1 2
