AI2: Bad Music, Mediocre TV

In all fairness, that's not meant to imply ALL of the final 30 aren't deserving. But now that we're in the battle rounds, where each individual gets the spotlight, I'm inclined to agree that if these 32 are the best out of thousands, then we're in pretty bad shape.

Mid-grade talent or not, I believe AI2 producers are guilty of working too hard to create stories and drama, rather than showcasing the contestants. For example the drama between Julie and Kimberly. Enough already! America please vote one of them off just so we can move past their "history."

Another example of the pre-fabricated drama - the schmaltzy addition of allowing family in the room with the waiting contestants. Boy, didn't our hearts just break when Bettis' sister wept over the judges unanimous bad review of his performance? Not! He was awful, plain and simple. The song didn't work for him and the choreography was wacked.

It hasn't escaped me that I have yet to offer a positive comment on any of the contestants so far, so I think I've made my point. But just in case I'm not being clear; American Idol is on its way to joining the many reality shows before it. After a smashing debut, which held American TV viewers enthralled, it has now already declined into train wreck status - you don't want to, but you have to stop and look.
