On The Solo Tip

Raphael Saddiq has always taken a sound, lyrics and a hot track and made it into a blend all his own. During his eight year run as lead vocalist for The Tonies, Saddiq played an integral part in establishing the band's sound. From the gospel flavored R&B hit "Little Walter" to the funky dance groove, "Let's Get Down," Saddiq pulled off any style he chose. It was no surprise then, when his style and distinctive voice dominated the flavor of the successful, but short-lived Lucy Pearl.

The eclectic artist is now newly solo and back with yet another new sound, Gospeldelic. So how is life as a solo artist for a musician who has played an essential role in breaking new ground with not one, but two bands?

Raphael Saddiq has this really laid back quality, a quiet but firm sense of self-assurance. Since launching his solo debut earlier this summer, Saddiq has been quoted touting the virtues of being able to pursue music unaccompanied by band mates and as we discussed this, he spoke with confidence, like one would expect of an artistic veteran.

Often newly solo artists have a tough time adjusting to life alone, but Raphael Saddiq isn't among them. "It's been a big challenge, but I always welcome new challenges," he says. "It's best to start off with a group so you can learn people. But then branch off and do the solo thing - you learn something new for the second leg of your career."

Staying true to his advice, the eclectic artist has been preparing - whether literally or unconsciously - for this leg of his career for many years. As the front man for Toni, Tony, Tone, Saddiq was a major creative force behind their sound and style; the funky combination that resulted in Lucy Pearl was 100% his vision; and he's always kept himself busy producing, writing and playing bass for other R&B/Soul artists. This ability to be so diverse has allowed him a luxury not often afforded by today's artists - the luxury of freedom.

His knack for excelling in music is second nature to the point that the multi-talented artist doesn't always immediately grasp how much his past work has impacted R&B/Soul music. As the lead vocalist and lyrical author, co-author or producer of many of their tracks, Saddiq played more than a bit role in The Tonyies' accomplishments. The band managed to maintain commercial appeal as well as artistic integrity as they successfully fused traditional soul with contemporary Hip Hop - no small feat. Still he reflects on his overall impact on the band saying simply, "We love music so much and when you love music it doesn't matter what's happening, it just matters that you love what you do."
