Confessions Of An 'American Idol' Junkie
And finally we chose Chris, who sang a convincing version of Brian McKnight's "Still in Love." He didn't try to be Brian McKnight - he sang the song at his own pace and in his own range, which made for a good performance. Tamyra was first and Kelli and Chris went last - so most of the show consisted of either good talent that didn't choose the right vehicle to prove their strength or mediocre singers that may do well locally, but stardom will always remain just out of reach. Now here's the thing - I'm not even that interested in the end result of American Idol. I figure the new star will end up in music obscurity like the "Pop Stars" products. But its really quite an interesting lesson in how the music industry can work. It also showcases just how tough it is to make it and how cruel a mistress, showbiz is. Over the next two weeks, 20 folks will have their dreams of stardom squashed. But hey, they're young, the industry is always looking, and there are still a million ways to make it in the biz without being the star. So come on, tune in with me... I won't tell anyone!
