Due to professional and personal obligations I haven't been as focused on the happs of the music scene as I'd like, so maybe its me. But still, didn't last summer seem to burst with more R&B artists and potential for hot hits? There was Jaheim, Blu Cantrell, Jon B, Janet and many others who blessed us with the beats that took us through the summer.
So far here's what I have: * New Artists Alert New artist, Lathun's track "Fortunate" is no Maxwell, but its a nice jam all the same. Word is that the CD is easy to love. Fair warning - its mostly ballads, so not your traditional summer fodder. Still, a hot track is a hot track! * Amerie's "Why Don't We Fall In Love" is getting much air play on local DC station, WPGC. Truthfully, the song is a bit generic, somewhat unoriginal, relatively short, and she sounds a little like CoCo, formerly of SWV. BUT its not a bad song, just nothing that rocks me. Still, its being hyped like she's the next big thing. So who knows - maybe it will be the summer sleeper. * Speaking of SWV - lead singer for new group Isyss sounds like CoCo as well. What's up - is someone trying to breath life back into the girl group sound? Ironically, when I saw the video for "Day and Night" they had the "look" of every other cookie cutter group. Jada's bit was solid, but they seemed typical of today's girl band set. But once I heard it on the radio I really began to like it. I guess it appeals to me best without the female eye candy. Bottom line: I'll reserve total judgement until I hear something else from them. * I'm feeling Best Man's jam "I See You." Sony is testing this trio on listeners - so far only the single is available. The jam got me nodding my head, so bring it on Sony - let's see what your boys got! * New Music - Fake Fans Musiq has finally dropped his sophomore CD, "Juslissen." Since his debut I've had high hopes for this brother. Even though "Half Crazy" has already reached playlist nirvana (i.e. already played out) there's much more to listen out for here, including "Something," a Beatles remake. |
