Re-Discover: Mint Condition

Meant To Be Mint
Ahh..the big band. Not since Earth, Wind & Fire has R&B been captivated by the sounds of a band. As R&B and Hip-Hop began to blend, the need for a full band seemed to decrease.

No doubt there is also an economic factor at play as well. Having to split the goodies between so many folks has always been a sticky wicket for that creature, the band.

But Mint Conditioncame out in the early 90's just when the concept of the band had all but disappeared. Four albums and one greatest hits compilation later, the group has flown under the radar since 1999.

Over the last year the band's name has primarily been mentioned in connection with the marriage of Toni Braxton and the band's guitarist, Keri Lewis. The two recently had their first child, so their name was conjured up once again. Other than that, nada.

Despite never truly acheieving "mainstream" success, the band's distinctive sound has earned them a solid core of fans.

For the fans and the curious alike (in case you haven't experienced the Mint) the band dropped a jewel in 1998. Perhaps realizing that each of their CDs held at least two jams on them, the band produced "The Collection 1991-1998," a greatest hits piece.

Though a bit premature for a band that only has four CDs under their belt, "The Collection" is the best way to experience them - because it truly is the best of their music.

From their first breakthrough hit, "Breakin My Heart (Pretty Brown Eyes)" to their last radio-friendly hit "What Kind Of Man Would I Be?" the CD offers us a taste of what we're missing without a live band ever present in the background.

But hey, don't take my word for it, re-discover Mint Condition for yourself. Check out these samples from their last CD "Life's Aquarium."
