Returning To The Throne? One left the arena amidst glory and accolades, an entire industry mourning his retirement. The other, made music history and didn't so much retire as disappeared off the scene as the world simultaneously praised his music and speculated cruely about his personal life. Unless you live under a rock, you know that both Michael Jordan and Michael Jackson have staged comebacks. And while MJ the basketball king has had the media and the public speculating on his return for a solid year - MJ, the King of Pop, has re-entered the scene almost as if he'd never left. Appearing as N'Sync's special guest during the MTV Video Music Awards, Michael Jackson (who we'll refer to as MJ-KOP), revealed that he can still move. But what exactly drives a person who has reached nearly every important professional mileston already, to return? And what should we expect from our pop icons once they've chosen to dive back into it? MJ says its the love of the game that keeps him coming back. Still, controversy has swirled around Jordan's return - will he be good enough, can he hang with the younger dudes, shouldn't he let his legacy remain intact and not risk marring it with a less than stellar return? MJ-KOP has not said why he's back, perhaps never realizing he was gone. Though nearly 5 years with no album is as close to retirement as an artist can get. Controversy swirled around Jackson shortly before he took his hiatus - lawsuits, rumors of sexual abuse of children, the conception of two children by a mysterious, hardly ever seen "wife", and speculation on his altered appearance are only a few things Jackson left behind. The actual return is nothing new, for years sports figures have unretired themselves - unable to shake the love of the game. And musical artists, some voluntarily retired, others simply has beens/faded stars, find themselves drawn back into the music scene for one more fling with the fickle public. Both Michael's have super egos - most individuals who are crowned the best usually do - so its no shocker that they'd risk their reputations to prove one thing: they're just that good!!!!! I for one do not think Jordan would return if he didn't already know he can beat the shorts off most of these young cats. MJ-KOP is a different story though - I have to admit that I wondered if he could really come back successfully to such a different music environment.
