R&B Today Vol. 14

Is it just me or....

* Does anyone else wonder how MTV can afford to show "VMAs Uncensored" for the entire week before the current year's edition? And then they take the 2001 VMA award show and make about 10 mini-shows out of it through TRL, House of Style and other MTV programming - these people know how to work a production budget don't they?

* Does BET's Fall programming look way too similiar to the type of shows MTV has been doing for the last 5 years? Yet, the production isn't quite the same level of quality. Keep trying BET..eventually you'll find your niche.

* Does new R&B artist Lina have some real potential? I've heard two tracks from her CD and both were pretty nice. She has this jazzy, old-time flair which she attributes to her love of the 20's-30's era. I'd like to hear her a few more times to make up my mind.

* Do we really care whether Suge Knight or Jermaine Dupri actually discovered Lil Bow Wow? Suge is saying he discovered the young hip-hopper before being sent to the clink. The reality - and you'd think Suge of all people would know this - is that its not about who discovered you, but who signed you first!

* Aren't we all curious as to whether Michael Jackson can make an honest to God comeback? His new single, "Rock My World" is pretty bangin' for someone who has musically been away from the scene for at least five years. MJ's music is considered Pop - so if he does manage to successfully rise to the top of the charts again, N'Sync, Backstreet and Britney can all hold out hope that their careers may last past their 15 minutes of fame.

* Is anyone else still wondering how a Latin Grammy award show is sustained and yet there is no such special show targeting R&B/Soul music? This isn't so much about the racial component as it is - when did so much Latin music come down the pike that they needed an entire Grammy show? While R&B/Soul, Hip-Hop, and Pop are bursting at the seams as is!

* Can you not wait to see the CBS special that will be produced from the reunion shows of Michael and his brothers? So many performers, so much glitz - I'm dying to see how it all comes together. And just fyi - Whitney performed and witnesses say she's skinnier than ever, no word yet on how her voice came across.
