Artist Spotlight: Maxwell

Let me tell you all about "the list." Its just what you're probably thinking it is - an old-fashioned, pardon my french, "shit list" that people go on when they make me mad. Mine is specifically for artists - and while its very easy to get on my list for not staying true to your craft or other minor musical indiscretions - its very hard to get off the list.

During your time on the list I refuse to purchase your CD or concert tickets. Yes, I know, like the labels are panicking over losing that one ticket! But that's not the point, its my own system of checks and balances to ensure I'm paying for a quality musical product.

R. Kelly made the list when he was still with the Public Announcement because I got sick of hearing their bump and grind, made for radio music. As his sound matured he was removed. But alas, he is currently back on the list because his current CD is reminiscent of his first - mainstream drivel that could be made by any cookie cutter artist. "Feeling On Your Bootie" - need I say more?!

Maxwell made the list about 2 years ago. The Max was scheduled to tour and I immediately purchased tickets. Rumors began to circulate that he wasn't ready for the tour and was only undertaking it due to pressure from the label. About a month after we purchased the tickets the concert was cancelled. When it was launched again 6-9 months later, I was unable to get tickets because they sold out too fast. So though it wasn't really his fault - he was on the list until just recently.

"Now" released late last month has placed the Max back in my good graces. I'm sure Columbia Records is relieved.

"Now" is one of Maxwell's best pieces of work - rivaled only by his own music. The only song on the entire CD that I dislike is track #10 "Symptom Unknown." Its just too depressing for me. But hey, that's what fast forward is for, right?

But outside of that one, every song on that CD is a solid, solid hit! I'm not sure who broke his heart, but the pain he was channeling produced some great tracks. I say he may be recovering from a broken heart because the lyrics reveal a man who loved, trusted and was hurt.

If I had to choose, my favorite track would be "Changed." But its tough because as soon as the next track plays I'm thinking its my favorite. He rocks this CD, taking you from a sexy, slow groove one minute to a dance track that makes you believe your feet and hips have a mind of their own!
