Where In The World is Whitney?
- Whitney obviously prefers guys with a slight edge. Right before her marriage to Bobby she was connected to Eddie Murphy and Randall Cunningham. When they dated, Eddie Murphy was known for his hard partying and sworn dedication to the life of a bachelor.
Now, while I have no more evidence than anyone else wondering why Whitney has chosen to literally let her career go up in smoke - the safe bet is that she hasn't so much changed her persona as she has chosen to be herself. Cardinal sin among entertainers since being yourself is almost always in direct contrast to what your fans think you are and what your management want you to be.
Now don't go blasting me - I'm not saying that Whitney's true self is some pot-smoking, crackhead. But it also isn't this soft spoken, easily duped, naive waif who was pushed into her current lifestyle.
Arista did such a good job building Whitney's image that I'm sure they never thought about what would happen if that image should shatter. They probably never imagined a day when Whitney would perform and not be able to hit those elegantly high notes; or would habitually cancel important performances; or would get caught in an airport with pot in her bag. Who could have?
When Bobby was released from jail last summer - Houston was there to welcome her hubby. Cameras from The Chris Rock Show reflected a haggard, hastily thrown together Houston- maybe from worry about her incarcerated hubby, maybe from the stifling Georgia heat, who knows. But she jumped into Bobby's arms as if a child - another sign of her fierce loyalty and love.
They've had their problems but I think the two truly love one another. Their marriage has lasted nearly 10 years - and that has to be a testament to something.
What makes Whitney and Bobby's story interesting is the gross waste of musical talent that lies within their marriage. Bobby is no King of R&B - as Whitney likes to claim every chance she gets - but he certainly can take his place in R&B history as having paved the way for the likes of young baublers like Tyrese and Usher. Tyrese has always named Bobby as one of his musical influences.
