R&B Today Vol. 12

I guess its from years of conditioning - Kindergarten through college - but when summer hits, my brain takes a break and I'm ready for a few months off. But alas there is no chance of that happening and since the record keeps spinning, so shall I.

People are talking about....

*Destiny's Child was being booed during the NBA finals halftime show and then again recently while touring. Hmmm...I guess their not as bootylicious as they thought! Remember - you heard it here first that they wouldn't be around this time next year, let's keep our ears out.

*Jimmy Crozier's jam,"She's All I've Got." Have you heard this song? Anytime the first verse starts off saying sometimes his woman blacks out, you know its gonna be ugly. Actually its a nice song with a decent beat and catchy hook. Its all about how she nags and complains but he won't let her go because she's all he's got. Rough life!

*N'Sync on 106th and Park . What in the world is that about?!!? When I saw their video on BET I thought I had the wrong channel. BET is a bit schizoid here lately - they want to be black entertainment but some of their new formatting (obvious rip offs of MTV programming) and now this embracing of straight teeny bopper pop makes me wonder where in the world they are going.

Don't get me wrong, I like all types of music. BUT - N'Sync gets plenty of love from MTV and Nickelodeon. Some R&B artists will only see the light of day on BET, so why are we now taking up that slot with such blatant pop music?!

*Luther's new CD, "Luther Vandross." Luther has found a new comfort zone with his classic music plus a few dance tracks that still support his style. "Take you Out" is a solid hit and track two "Grown Things," co-written and produced by Jon B and Baby Face, is certainly my front runner for the next release.

*Newcomer, Alicia Keys. With the hit single, "Fallin" from her debut project "Songs in A Minor" riding the charts, this young star is turning heads. Recently showcased on Oprah with Jill Scott and Yolanda Adams - its obvious that though new to the scene she's set the stage to become a soul powerhouse.

*And by the way, both Keys and Luther Vandross are members of Clive Davis' new label, J-records. Looks like Clive isn't missing Arista one bit! But while Arista stars like Whitney Houston get their stuff together, I'm sure Arista is second guessing forcing Clive out the door.
