R&B Today - Vol 10

People are talking about:

*Tyrese's latest project "2000 Watts," which includes the single "I Like Them Girls." After more than two years since his debut CD, Tyrese is back, trying to establish some sort of hard core identity. "I Like Them Girls" is an LL Cool J "Round The Way Girl" type anthem.

I was beginning to think that his music career was just a way to get his foot into the door at MTV - and that still may be the case. On BET's "Spring Bling" Tyrese received a chilly, if not non-chalant response to the new single. I think he's seeing the ugly side of going mainstream - hmmm, maybe that's why his sophomore project comes direct with the urban flava.

*Speaking of BET's "Spring Bling," what in the heck was the deal with this MTV Spring Break rip-off?! From the island location to the silly games and Fashionably Loud-like fashion show, Spring Bling was a bad replica of MTV's annual event.

The crowd was unresponsive - so don't feel bad Tyrese, I don't think their reception of you was personal. The models seemed confused because most of the music was too slow to truly enforce traditional modeling moves. The hosting was weak, from well known artists to virtual unknowns. RL from Next, was a celebrity host and I'm not going out on a limb when I say he needs to stick to singing.

BET is currently re-running the show. There are at least 5 episodes, so it shouldn't be hard to catch. But don't lose any sleep over it if you've missed any.

*Janet's "All For You" is the #1 album, selling more than 605,000 copies in its first week - 400,000 more than "The Velvet Rope" in the same period.

* John Singleton's new movie, Baby Boy, hitting theatres late June. The release will mark 10 years since Singleton's first, project "Boyz N The Hood." Though not a sequel, Baby Boy is a "hood" movie and will star Tyrese. Singleton's last project, a remake of "Shaft" starring Samuel L. Jackson, was somewhat of a disappointment for many fans - straying away from the director's trademark message-oriented, infotainment style flicks. Look for "Baby Boy" to bring back that style in full force.
