* How can both D'Angelo and Carl Thomas walk away empty handed from the Soul Train Music Awards and Jagged Edge get Artist or Album of the Year? Have the judges fallen down and bumped their heads? The operative word here is "soul" which Mr. D has lots of..major oversight!
* On the up side, Eminem was shut out of the Soul Train Music awards, taking home nada. That's to make up for the Grammy super hype and him taking home best Rap Album. How is it that past tracks from rap artists have been blasted for misogynistic lyrics and homophobia for quite some time - but when Eminem does it the Grammy judges turn it into a prolific piece of work. Whatever!! * The new project from Destiny's Child is called "Survivor," they'll be performing it live for the first time during tomorrows broadcast of the Soul Train Music Awards. The group itself may be Survivors - its the individual members that have the life expectancy of a gnat. It's why Olivia Foxx of radio's syndicated "Russ Parr Morning Show" just calls them 'Beyonce and 'nem." * I'm glad to see that Sunshine Anderson's groove, "Heard it all Before" is getting much love. The first time I heard that track last summer on the HBO's, Soul Food, I knew it was a tight song. Be on the lookout for the Soul Food soundtrack, which will feature this artist from Atlantic Records and many others played during the show. Sunshine's debut CD hits stores April 17. * I know that the Grammy's has really grown over the years, as it embraces new genres of music BUT so many of the R&B awards (including D'Angelo for Best R&B Album) were presented off camera. Soul music is getting the shaft all the way around - off camera awards for the Grammy's and a Saturday night presentation of the Soul Train awards - Saturday night, TV's graveyard shift. * If you haven't heard it yet, Janet Jackson's new jam "All for you" is a great dance track. It samples the old R&B jam, "Glow of Love" by Luther Vandross when he was with Change. Check her out on MTV's Icon on March 13 and the CD drops April 24. She's naked as the day she was born on her album cover, but I'm never mad at Ms. Janet - do your thing girl! * Okay back to my beef with Jagged Edge taking home the high honors from Soul Train. I'm not hatin' on them - but when Jagged Edge and the many other male groups like them are long gone, people like D'Angelo, Carl Thomas and Brian McKnight will still be belting out soulful tunes - maybe I just need to know the criteria for winning an Album of the Year honor..can anyone tell me?
