Enough Already!

Everybody sick of award shows please raise their hand! With music being more popular than ever, award shows are popping up everywhere. No longer do we have to wait around for the annual Grammy or American Music Award show - there are now hosts of award events filling the airwaves. As a matter of fact, every publication and cable outlet seems to have one.

From the Latin Grammy's to the Source awards, I can't seem to get away from these long, boring star-studded events. And I will spare everyone my inquiry into how we're justifying a Latin Grammy's but yet haven't had one for African Americans who have also played a very large part in the development of music over the years!

Don't get me wrong. I have no desire to add another awards show to the mix, but I'm baffled how the contribution of Latin artists is anymore important than any other ethnic group. But that's really not the point. The point is, enough with the damn award shows already.

As if the Source awards and the bruhaha that broke out during the taping wasn't bad enough. MTV's sad display on Thursday night had to be its dryest awards show ever. After hyping the thing for nearly a month, the pre, post and actual show were the most boring thing I've seen since watching paint dry. And did anyone else want to jump out of the window after hearing clips from N'Sync's "Bye, Bye, Bye," Red Hot Chili Pepper's "Californiacation" or Destiny's Child, "Say My Name" over and over again?!

The Source and MTV's award shows have proven without any doubt that award shows reached their peak years ago and it's now time to retire a few of them..hell all of them. I mean the Grammy's manages to get in a few good performances, but overall it too is pretty boring.

And this find the hottest comedian to host, what is that all about? The Wayan brothers laughed at their own jokes so often, I had to remind myself that this wasn't their first time on stage. I mean they were dying up there!

The formula for awards shows has become more generic than the use of the word Kleenex to describe tissues. Just add scantily clad stars, screaming fans, badly written scripts for presenters, a quirky or very "serious" looking statuette, a comedian to host, and the same 10 artists competiting for the same honors as every other award show - i.e. artist of the year, best duo or group, an honorary award and you have a three hour yawnfest.
