The Songwriters Hall of Fame 32nd Annual Awards Dinner took place Thursday, June 14, and your faithful reporter was there to cover the event. The inductees for 2001 were Dolly Parton, Diane Warren, Willie Nelson, and Paul Williams. Billy Joel received the Johnny Mercer Award, Gloria and Emilio Estefan were awarded the Sammy Cahn Lifetime Achievement Award, and Dionne Warwick was given the Hitmaker Award. The song "Let Me Call You Sweetheart," written by Leo Friedman and Beth Slater, won the Towering Song Award.

Among the highlights: Paul Schaffer presented the award to Dolly Parton, and Emmylou Harris performed for her. Clive Davis presented to Diane Warren, with Deborah Cox performing. Judy Collins and Kermit the Frog presented to Paul Williams. Marc Anthony performed for Billy Joel. John Secada presented and performed for the Estefans. Rob Thomas, of matchbox twenty, presented via video to Willie Nelson, and Dave Matthews performed. Elvis Costello performed for Dionne Warwick.
