How Inspiring: Tapping into Songwriting

Lyrically speaking, if I'm starting with the concept, I initially try to come up with the hook or the first line, because a good one will naturally lead me well. (And of course, both have to be killer. Nothing like a little pressure!) I find that it helps to think visually, because it allows me to free associate more easily, plus a visual usually draws in the listener with a sense of place. But more importantly, in terms of that inspiration I'm looking for, it helps draw ME in as the writer. It puts me there, and then I can take others with me.

And no matter how little time I may have, I try as best I can to not edit myself while I'm writing creatively. Both are integral to the process, of course, but simultaneously, those two heads are not better than one! If you tend to be your own worst critic, this is not the time. Give yourself, and your creation, a break. You'll both be the better for it.

Incidentally, if you're stuck on one project, and you have the luxury of a little extra time, you might try writing something else that appeals to you. You know, to get the creative juices running. That's what I just did. Lyrics, here I come!
