What is a Galaxy, Anyway? - Page 2© Dina Ely
The "neighborhood" surrounding the Milky Way is called the "Local Group". There are approximately 30 galaxies in the group. The largest galaxy in the group is called "Andromeda". There are many galaxies in orbit around Andromeda. Our galaxy has several other galaxies in orbit, too. There are two very well-known galaxies that orbit the Milky Way, and they are the Large Magellanic Cloud and the Small Magellanic Cloud.
It is thrilling to think that astronomers can observe other galaxies through their telescopes. I myself have seen the nearby Andromeda galaxy, our closest neighbor. I can't help but wonder, are there Earth-like planets in other galaxies out there with beings just like us, looking up towards the stars and pondering the mysteries of the universe, too?
