Which Accounting And Financial Software?

Planning to purchase accounting software in the near future? Well, you better do your homework first as this is not for the faint hearted. Here are 4 software packages you should most definitely consider. They all can get the job done but have different strengths and weaknesses.
  • Microsoft's Money 99 Financial Suite - It's claim to fame is its ability to carry out the tasks associated with short- and long-term planning. This is NOT an accounting package. It's good for managing your finances, paying bills, creating a budget and the like. $64.95
  • Intuit's QuickBooks Pro 99 - I've used QuickBooks for many years now and have also recommended it to many. It is the easiest business accounting package for non-accountants. Very integrated toolset such as invoicing, budgeting, checkwriting, tax filing preparation, accounts payable and receivable etc. $219.00
  • Intuit's Quicken Home and Business 99 - Great software program for managing your home and small business. You can create invoices easily, track reimbursables, generate Schedule C reports as well as organize, save and invest your money. $89.95
  • BestWare's M.Y.O.B. Accounting Plus 8.0 - Super powerful accounting and inventory management. Great audit trail features. But as with the Complete Accounting package, ease of use is not a trait I would associate with this product. Much less intuitive than the QuickBooks Pro 99 product. $179.00
  • Peachtree's Complete Accounting 6.0 - This has the best accounting and financial management tools for growing businesses. It's very powerful, but I found that its level of complexity rather daunting. This product has almost as much power as M.Y.O.B. but it is a bit more straightforward to use than M.Y.O.B. $199.00

My Recommendation - Intuit's QuickBooks Pro 99 because it's packed with useful features and it's interview style for setting up your business makes for a pleasant experience. Easy accounting for the small-business non-accountant.

Finally, check out Beyond.com - The Software Superstore! They've got some great prices and a vast array of software titles.
