Music Under the Influence of the Id. Help!

Hello once again to all of my readers and thank you for your support and even lack thereof. Any reply is a welcome reply. That said, let's get down to business.

The music industry today is making me sick. Now, I wasn't alive when the Monkees were big but I do know waht I've been told. These Monkees were lambasted as frauds for not writing their own music or playing their own instruments. I can see complete validity in such a response. I'd be upset too. Things have changed. Brittany Spears is your modern day version of The Monkees. Here's a person who is more or less a figurehead of the semi-talented people behind the scenes. She doesn't do her own choreography, write her own music or play any instuments. I don't care how well she sings, (which, by the way, I don't think she can), she is still just another pretty face. It's sad really. I saw her in an interview recently in which she said that she finds it interesting that the songs that she's singing can actually apply to her life. Of course they can! I'd like you to point out a single individual over the age of 15 who hasn't had some issue dealing with a relationship, not fitting in, loss of innocence, feeling isolated or any of those other bland, cliche, done to death subjects that rear their ugly heads within the lyrics of every boy band, girl band, pop band, soul group, and even in bad rap, i.e. Sisquo. There's no substance here! Sex is even the strongest prevailing motif in music! What is happening here! Of course, there are two sides to every coin.

This coin had a rather wonderful flip side to it. A flip side that includes the likes of Moby, D.J. Shadow, The Smashing Pumpkins, King Cob Steele...I could go on. These are groups that manage to hold on to what music is all about. Music. Not image, not popularity, but simply, music. Moby managed to produce on of this years best selling C.D.'s that is full of wonderful, emotional music, proving that there is a glimmer of hope from the underground. The Smashing Pumpkins recently released their final album ever, for FREE over the internet. And it's darn good. There are so many good bands out there that know what it's about and I'm afraid that there just isn't enough time to name off everything. I just don't like the way things seen to be heading.
