Raising a gifted child

Dec 18, 2002 - © Sally Bartha

We have striven to help our daughter understand the difference between perfection and excellence, something we still work on even at age 20. Her perfectionist tendencies have sometimes been a stumbling block to her. The minds of gifted children seem to work on such a high plane of thought, they need to be reigned in and shown that some things are finally finished!

The most important thing we tried to do with Laura is to teach her that being herself, standing "outside of the box" was a good thing. We consistently reminded her that she didn't have to be like everyone else, something difficult to understand during the teen years but very rewarding later on.

A good sense of humor helped us over many of the tough spots that gifted parents and kids often go through.

Laura is now twenty years old and a sophomore in college. College has opened many doors for her to explore and life is still full of both frustrations and challenges for all of us.
