Mia and Me

Ring... Ring.... "Hallo." "Hi Joe." "Mia, how are you. I thought you would be on earlier. You waited until the Russian China matchup kicked off." "Well Joe, I'm watching it with ya buddy." " Thanks Mia, you know and suite 101 readers know that I've talked with the best during big games and it's a pleasure to have you along for some quarter final coverage. How do you see it going?"

"I think every game will be hard fought at this stage as you would expect and it will take 100% effort to get past any opponent" "Oh come on Mia, what do you really think? "Well, really, no team will be a pushover, we're at the quarter finals of the world cup and everyone is a contender."

"Fair enough, my fleet footed feline friend, be diplomatic. But I'm guessing that China is the class act here. I'm not the expert you are, but let's watch and learn."

So the short version of the first half is this: Russia will probably not score anytime in the next few hours although they will get one chance sometime. China will score, perhaps frequently based on the evidence. It turns out to be just one goal in the bank account at this point. But as a contest, it's been a sixteen-lane highway with fifteen lanes heading towards Russia, and the other lane temporarily closed. This level of one way traffic means the odds of a turnaround second half and competitive entertainment for the fans are slim to none. But it's still entertaining, and I'm enthralled as usual.

"Let's talk about your game tomorrow, Mia. Are you guys ready for Germany?" "Bring it on Joe, another sellout crowd behind us, we're as well prepared as we can be and we are eager to go. Excuse me Joe, my other line is chiming and I'm expecting Michael Jordan. We've got another commercial to shoot soon and I forget what it's for."

"By all means, Mia, put me on hold while his airness (or is it airless these days?) rehearses lines with you. And the second half is just starting, anyway."

Well it turns out that the Russians try very hard and it's admirable but futile. The Chinese are relentless and their class continues to show and shine. It's a case of what will the final margin be. It's two nothing before Mia finishes with Michael and returns to her second most important phone call.
