I've been meaning to do a column about All My Children for a few months now. But now I'm finally getting to it and I guess the first thing I want to say is, what the heck happened?! The show is dare I say it, boring. I mean simply and absolutely boring. The stories are uninspired, the characters seem to have been created in a cookie cutter, and well, it's boring!
I guess the best place to start is with this influx of teenagers and twenty-something kids. Whether they are recast characters like Kendall or long lost relatives like Trey, they are all over the place. And how can you really tell one from the other? Let's start with Kendall. Just what is the deal with her this time around? Kendall left Pine Valley a little wiser and with little animosity towards Erica. But returned with more anger than she left with and even less motivation. But it has continued to the point that it is tired and Kendall the character has suffered in the process. Who is this young woman? Does she still idolize Erica? What is she looking for in her life? Why does she value love less than she did when she was in town before? And it is simply laughable to see man after man after man fall for this woman. No slam to Alicia, but she is missing something very crucial to being Kendall, sassiness. Kendall had sass, which added to her seductive nature, her vindictive personality, and her passion. That's gone now. I couldn't buy Alicia's Kendall seducing her mother's husband and I don't buy Alicia's Kendall when she is supposed to be vulnerable (although I'm willing to concede that may be the writers' fault). Thursday's episode centered around the Kane women ... and it was boring! Only the interesting twist in Lena and Bianca's conversation made tuning the least bit worth it. The Jamie recast seems to be going nowhere and the same goes for our new J.R. when we had a perfectly good J.R. a few years ago. But not only did they abandon Jesse McCartney, they abandoned the history that came with him. J.R.'s biggest problem is his romance with Laurie and his affair with Kendall? What ever happened to that struggle with drugs? With his mother dead, his father absolutely despicable, and his stepmother going through her own emotional problems, it would seem like falling off the wagon is the obvious place to go. Instead they focus on him falling on Kendall. I can't even describe how disgusting that is.
