The Good, the Bad, and the Restless

Every soap has its' fan base. Picture this, an eighteenth month baby boy, being watched down the road by a young woman who has digital cable, plenty of channels. The baby is in a mood and is constantly whining and wailing as she furiously channel surfs, when she comes upon The Young and the Restless, particularly, Phyllis on the stand, he quiets down and pays attention. When she tries to change the change the channel, he goes back to wailing and will not quiet back down until she puts the soap back on. The boy's parents, not soap watchers, have no idea why their son seems enthralled by the daytime drama. Until this true story, I thought I was odd for getting hooked on As the World Turns at the age of two...

As a soap fan from childhood, I was actually able to start watching only a few years after the show began. As for actually getting into the folks in Genoa City ... I don't think I ever have. Oh sure, I've enjoyed several characters over the years, had a few favorite stories and couples (all off the wall), but it never made the connection and resulted in the attachment other soaps have had. So why watch it? Out of habit? More like it's the first soap on. That and my hairdresser was addicted to Y&R so I was often quite caught up.

Something about this show makes it a fan favorite, perhaps for the same reasons I've ended up watching for the last twenty plus years, it's rather easy to watch. Perhaps some get more easily hooked than I do on the goings on. Who knows? But nearly everywhere I go at that time of the morning, if there is a TV, it's on Y&R. It doesn't matter if it is an emergency room, hairdresser, a high school principal's office, or Circuit City, it's always on. That said, I'm still not sure what keeps people hooked the way they are, I simply have no idea. My reasons are completely trivial; I love how the actresses walk on the show. I don't know what it is; the shoes, the clothes, or the sets, but the way all the women walk as they enter a scene, come down the stairs, or even answer a phone, has a certain panache that I envy. I also like how much everyone eats. It's always struck me somehow. Perhaps because the actresses are always being so careful for their lipstick and nail polish. But the daily breakfasts in the Abbott mansion is the kind of soap moment you just don't see anymore if for no other reason than the family is together and they are actually chewing instead of ordering food at some local eatery while it sits there untouched.
