frustrating story another, and then a really hyper and engrossing story the next. As a result some episodes are fantastic soap viewing, others are sleep inducing, and others give fans a "blah" feeling. There are endless examples of this across the dial. Some soaps are having difficulty with this for obvious reasons like poor writing, but that diagnosis isn't gonna work with Y&R. Y&R has plenty of stories that are really clicking right now and there are no sudden changes in upcoming storylines. And yet, there are a couple of slow stories that makes you want to groan when they end up being featured instead of something viewers are on their edge of their seats to see. Yes, Y&R is without question, the slowest soap which depending on how you like your television is an asset or a drawback. But still, when I tuned in a couple of weeks ago and felt the show was crawling along with things I could care less about, I was stunned. It was like most of the week was just a waste of airtime before the major stories hit a fever pace for sweeps and it was depressing to see the strongest soap get so lazy. Y&R's moment of weakness, however, doesn't compare to the fractured stories on As the World Turns or All My Children. ATWT's fractured feeling is partially due to scrapping nearly every story after the top brass tired of bad dropping ratings. As stories change, get dumped midstream, or are forced to be pushed front and center prematurely, tuning in to ATWT is one of the biggest crap shoots out there. You take the risk; you could be rewarded with some of the best daytime entertainment that can be offered. Or you could want to scream at the amount of stupidity the writers manage to shove into such a short period of time. Strong performances and good dialogue often save AMC's jumble of stories, but nearly every story on the canvas is one fans dislike for one reason or another. Of course fan reaction ranges from unhappiness to outrage over this baby story, but heck, it isn't boring. If only every other story had that much energy and quality behind it there wouldn't be this odd relief and dread when the baby story isn't the main story of the day. Let's face it, on the primary level of smart storyline ideas, nothing else
