The Best and Worst of 2003: Romances

The Best Couple Conflict: Jack and Phyllis (Y&R) - For the second year in a row, I deem this pair the best written. Even though now they are no longer happy, even though I personally have never really liked them, this pair's erosion has been incredibly realistic and character driven. Phyllis slipping back into her selfish, tunnel vision actions when she and Jack were pitted against each other professionally was genius. The buildup of stress, estrangement, forced resolutions, and tape to hold the relationship together has been so beautifully done that when Jack has finally had it with Phyllis it will be as crucial appointment TV as Diane's downfall was.

The Worst Couple Conflict: Lena and Bianca (AMC) - Could the writers been anymore obvious about the real reason for Bianca's rape? In actuality, I would have thought it would bring them together in time. Sure, at first, Bianca could have associated her love with her former lover, but that wasn't even the reason she pushed her away. To make matters worse, Lena's suicide attempt was poorly done, barely addressed, and appears to have been used to usher her out instead of utilizing her. Sure, this is good for Maggie and Bianca fans I suppose, but the childish way these two won't communicate while Bianca carries Michael's child is just ridiculous.

The Worst New Couple: Jessica and Antonio (OLTL) - Ugh, where do I begin? Let's start with the fact that the pairing began with Antonio, basically being jaded, prejudiced, and racist regarding Jessica's life as a white middle-class girl while he ranted and raged about his minority status in comparison. Wow, can't you see the potential there? I mean really, what girl wouldn't fall in love with a guy who can't see past your race or social status even though you've known him since you were a young teen? Then there was the obvious fact that Antonio clearly has anger and control issues that didn't faze his new girlfriend. This is the woman who at the same time learned her father was Mitch Laurence right? This is the same woman who had a hard time forgiving the father of her daughter for embezzlement? I'm supposed to believe that Antonio's secret bearing of his future mother-in-law's child made him attractive to her? We aren't even talking about lack of chemistry; there is so much animosity, distrust, and oppression in this relationship that it's downright ugly, not romantic.
