The Couple LoopThis sweeps there aren't really a lot of happy romantic relationships. In fact, newlywed couples are really getting punished. There was a big secret between Bold and the Beautiful's Brooke and Ridge after he was presumed dead on their honeymoon, while One Live to Live Cristian and Natalie barely got back down the aisle before he was rather unceremoniously killed. Soaps certainly aren't wasting anytime thrusting new problems on pairings. It seems the second a couple gets married, there's a looming problem. As the World Turns hasn't had a wedding that didn't spell doom in at least a year besides Jack and Carly's second try and Hal and Emily's. There are no weddings on the horizon on Passions, while Days' Jack and Jennifer couldn't get to a six-month anniversary. B&B's Macy was a vegetable less than two months after she got married and practically seconds after General Hospital's Emily married Zander she was eyeing Nikolas. It's always something these days isn't it? I mean, come on, at least give these couples a year to be married before one walks out, falls in love with someone else, or tells a tale that when discovered will destroy the union. That isn't so much to ask for is it? We've all said and heard it said before when a fan favorite gets hitched: "I hope they let them be happy for a while." We say it because we know eventually, something will happen; a soap veteran knows that nothing lasts forever. But just exactly what do fans mean when they say they want their favorite couple to happy for a while? What exactly does "happy" mean? I ask because it does seem like fans differ on this one. Happy as in alive, married, and having a sweet moment here and there? Happy as in going through struggles but coming out stronger than ever? Or happy as in constantly making out every time they are on screen? We've been so conditioned to be used to happy couples either being on the backburner or headed for trouble quickly, would we even enjoy a happy couple if we saw one? Could it be that fans are so tired of that continous on-again-off-again, that they are now ready to have couples do nothing but say sweet nothings to each other? If you want a pairing with no problems whatsoever in their relationship, that might be kind of hard to manage. I don't agree with soaps' current lazy writers' opinion that happiness can't be portrayed in an interesting way. But I don't think it can be done non stop.
