No pool to stay cool?Alyice Edrich Copyright June 2000 Title: No pool to stay cool? You don't have to have a pool to stay cool this summer! As Corona begins to heat up, many are heading to local lakes, beaches, and water parks; not to mention Corona's own public pool. What about those days when you simply cannot make the drive or do not want to deal with crowds of people? How does one stay cool then? No, we don't hide out in our air conditioned homes. What fun would that be anyway? What we can and should do, is use a little imagination, creativity, and horse play. We can have fun in our very own yards and here are a few helpful ideas to get you started: 1. Water Balloon Fights - Fill up as many balloons as you can with water, divide them amongst everyone and let the fun begin. 2. Water Gun Fights - Give everyone the same size water gun and have some fun soaking each other as you race to the hose to refill before getting soaked. 3. Sprinkler Tag - Set the sprinklers to stay on for 30 minutes and play various forms of tag as you race through the sprays of water. 4. Slip 'N Slide - Hit your local department store and purchase the latest version of Slip 'N Slide. For those of you who don't know what one is, it is roughly an eight foot long piece of plastic that a hose attaches to, as water soaks the mat. You then place the mat on the grass and run as you slide into home base. 5. Ice Cream Food Fight - head out to your local grocer and purchase the largest and cheapest tub of ice cream they have. Then put on your bathing suits, head out in the back yard, and grab handfuls of ice cream as you try to dodge the flying mounds headed your way. 6. Purchase a wading pool - As the little ones have fun flopping around water, you can give each older child a plastic cup. Then, simply fill the plastic cup up with water from the pool and chase each other as you throw water at each other. You could even have fun trying to dunk one another in the wading pool. 7. Balloon Toss - Fill up as many balloons as you can with water, then form two opposing lines. Have one person toss a balloon to the other person and with each successful catch step back one foot in length. What this does is cause the range of the toss to get further and further apart with each successful catch. The further one gets from their partner, the harder it gets not to get soaked as the balloon crashes to the ground from an unsuccessful catch.
