California, Beat those Summertime Blues

Beat those Summertime Blues by Alyice Edrich Copyright June 6, 2000

Summer is fast approaching, as is the days of kids screaming about how bored they are. Before they begin belting out those summertime blues; however, I thought I would help you find activities that fit into the stay-at-home mom's budget. If you live outside of Southern California, don't worry... these ideas will trigger your memory as to what's available in your area.

First, we have the activities that cost. Some of these activities can seem like a large chunk of change, at first site. But keep in mind that purchasing these tickets will save you tons of money over the entire summer, not to mention your sanity.

1. Brunswick Classic Lanes, in Norco (909-374-8410), where kids ages 3-6 can bowl for ten Saturdays, in a row, for only $27. Kids ages 7-11 can play for $50 and yes, it does include shoe rentals. And to top it all off, they end the session with a party and trophies after the last game. If you missed out on the first session, don't worry. I've been told that it will be going on all summer long. They also have a great Cosmic Bowling package which includes music, non-stop bowling and shoe rentals.

2. Riverside Drive-In, off Van Buren Blvd. In Riverside (909-688-2360), is a great place to hang out on those hot summer nights. The cost is $5 per adult or child over 12 and free for children under 12. We bring our lawn chairs, blankets, and warm clothes as we caravan to the drive-in with a few other families.

3. Knott's Berry Farm, in Buena Park (714-220-5220) offers annual passes for $109.95 per adult and $49.95 per child ages 3-11. When you consider it costs $38 per adult and $28 per child normally, you can see why I opt for the annual pass every year. And with parking at an all time high of $7 per visit, I also opt for the $35 annual parking pass. Right now through June 22, Knotts is offering a free beach towel and child's ticket to Soak City USA, with each paid child's admission.

4. Soak City USA, in Buena Park (714-220-5220) is a new water park built by and next to Knott's Berry Farm. The cost is $19.95 per adult and $13.95 per child ages 3-11. At one time, they were offering a summer pass for $49 per adult, but the website does not seem to indicate if they are still honoring that price.
