Shoping for Bird Lovers

Dec 3, 1999 - © Mary Wilson

What do you buy for people whose idea of a wardrobe consists of a shirt with a frayed collar from a chewing bird, or who discuss at length the different types of coverings for the bottom of a bird cage? There are several practical ideas that any bird person would be delighted to have for the holidays, and fortunately, they are well within anyone's budget.

Contrary to popular belief, all bird lovers do not appreciate more birds. Sometimes an individual is waiting for "the perfect" bird before adding to their household, and giving this person another bird is not the answer. Someone who is interested in birds may not appreciate a bird for the holidays. In fact, most humane societies advise against giving a live animal as a present to anyone who has not specifically requested it. And even then, it may be difficult because the person wanting the animal had one picture in his or her mind, and the person buying may have a totally different picture. It is, okay, however, to offer to pay for a bird that the person wants, just as long as they do the purchasing.

For a surprise present, there are several different avenues for the gift giver. A subscription to a bird magazine, such as Bird Talk, or Pet Bird Report, will be a hit with someone who owns birds, as will any good bird book. For most species of birds there are several breed specific books, and there are also general bird care or bird behavior books on the market.

Bird toys are also another sure bet with a bird lover. For those who own larger birds or aggressive chewers, the purchase of bird toys may be a welcome relief for a stretched bird budget. In addition, bird toys are something the bird and its owner can enjoy together.

Bird food may be another welcome gift. If the person giving the gift lives with the person and his or her bird, and knows what brand to purchase, this could be another small (or not so small) gift for the person during the holiday season.

When in doubt give a gift certificate. Whether to an on-line pet store, such as pets.com or petquarters.com, or to a pet store in town, the gift certificate makes a thoughtful gift. Even if it isn't to the person's favorite pet store, it still can be used for bird, or other pet, supplies.

Gift giving this holiday season can be hassle-free for the bird person. When in doubt, make sure it relates to birds (but isn't a live bird.)
