The controversy over using a Chihuahua to advertise Mexican food grew so intense among individuals within the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) that the National President of the League issued a press release saying, "At no time has the LULAC National Board of Directors or any of the LULAC national staff called on Taco Bell to stop running commercials which feature a Chihuahua." Many Cuban Americans criticized the commercial which featured the Chihuahua as a beret wearing dictator, speaking from a podium draped in red flags and bunting. In this case, community pressure may have curtailed the ad's air time. Taco Bell defended the ads citing positive comments by various ethnic groups during market testing of the commercial. Chihuahua breeders are concerned by the recent surge in Chihuahua adoptions because they know the dogs are fragile and temperamental. Since Chihuahuas are not typically suited for families, breeders fear the dogs will end up abandoned like hundreds of Dalmatians after the release of the movie 101 Dalmatians. Despite the controversy, an eager public continues to chant the latest manta-Yo Quiero More Chihuahua...I want more Chihuahua. More about Chihuahua history, personality and health in Part Two.
