A website is a business marketing decision.
Business people have by and large allowed the confusing nature of the marketplace to overwhelm their most basic instincts. As a group, they have allowed their business sense to become overwhelmed by the design, hosting, pricing, and all of the other little issues in between.
The first lesson of planning any business is answering the question:
What do I want?
When that question is answered, it's a lot easier to answer the other questions. A properly conceived reason for having a website means doing a small marketing plan, whether it be informal or official, deciding how much money to commit (and being realistic about the costs - more in another article), and how far and how fast to go.
The important point is that all of these things allow us to measure results. Thousands of well operated brick-and-mortar (real-world, office, retail stores, etc.) businesses have websites without any sense of direction. Is it for information, to draw people to your current business, or to sell online as though it were a separate store? Are you really interested in selling to the world?
Get these questions answered first, and you will be more capable of discussing what you want with your service providers.
