We've talked a lot about web sites for your small business - the previous article was called Web Site III. Web sites are an important part of the virtual business model. Unfortunately web sites are easy to do. There is a great temptation to just go ahead, register a name, get a free html editor and go to it.
I say "unfortunately" because there are a lot of truly awful web sites out there. Many remind me of one of my customers, a large and successful corporation, with whose president I was discussing web sites. I asked him if he had seen his own and he said no, but someone on staff who was familiar with the technology was in charge. When I pressed him to find out who it was, he called head office - it turned out to be the mail boy. This doesn't mean you shouldn't do your own web site. If you have a clear idea of what you want from it and are willing to put in the time to find out what works, what to do and how to do it, you are probably the best one to carry out the work. That having been said, I'd like you to take a look at the Bud Uglly web site. This web site has been conciously (I hope) designed to magnify the common mistakes made in many web sites. It is so bad it is hilariously funny because we see very similar things every day. Just not all together in one place. The great thing about this site is that it is not preachy or condescending - just by being itself it will teach you lots about what works, what doesn't and how to avoid some common pitfalls. If it doesn't, it's still lots of fun. Have a look. Go To Page: 1
