A Plan is Just a Piece of Paper

Here it is important to realize that the plan is just a piece of paper which can easily be thrown out and replaced but that doesn't mean scrapping the business. A small business is a very versatile tool which can be used to do all kinds of things. It's just a question of again establishing what you want to do and why. The why is important because it often survives the what. The reasons you had for establishing the original goal may still be valid. You may have to change where you're going and how you're going to get there but the reason you're travelling in the first place often stays the same.

The important thing, for a small business, is that you know that reason and that you know where you're going. The direction in which you're taking your small business can change as can the goal and even the reason you're in business but you have to know all three at any given time to make the best decisions possible whether it's to stay on the main highway or get off for a while. If you don't know these three things, you can still make good decisions but you won't make the best decisions.
