Holidays at the Waterside© Katarina Cadrova
Summer months, especially July and August, are the best time for vacation and relax in Slovakia. A lot of tourists visit this country and also our tourists look forward to spending their free time near water or they go to the beach in the southern Europe.
The most popular region of Slovakia for summer vacation is Central of Slovakia. There are a lot of mountain-rivers presenting a great challenge for water slalom supporters, and also there are calmer streams and water tanks ideal for a wide variety of water sports, leisure and fishing.
There are two most popular and visited lakes in this region: Liptovska Mara and Vodna nadrz Orava - Water Reservoir of Orava. Liptovska Mara is a lake of 28 square kilometers on the river Vah, which was created by inundation of several villages. It bears the name of one of them. Most valuable houses from the flooded villages tourists can see at the open-air museum called Liptovske Museum in the village Pribylina. This lake attracts thousands of tourists every year. There are excellent conditions for canoeing, yachting, swimming, windsurfing, diving and fishing. On the northern bank there were built some recreation resorts like Bobrovnik, Liptovsky Trnovec, Liptovska Sielnica, etc. Besides water sports tourist can enjoy trips and hiking to the nearest mountains of Chocske Vrchy, the High and Low Tatras. Also this region is very popular for folk architecture, which can be admired in the settlement Vlkolinec, or romantic ruins of castles - Likavka, Liptovsky Hrad, Stary Hrad, etc. The largest water area in the Slovak Republic is Vodna nadrz Orava - Water Reservoir of Orava with 35 square kilometers. It was built at the confluence of two rivers Biela a Cierna Orava - White and Black Orava - in the basin Oravska kotlina under the slopes of Oravska Magura and Podbeskydska vrchovina. This reservoir is providing excellent conditions for summer holidays, fishing and a variety of water sports. An unusual experience is a voyage by boat and a visit of Slanicky ostrov - Slanicky Island - the island of arts. There is a Baroque church with an exposition of the Slovak folk sculpture and painting. The surrounding mountains, Rohace, Babia Hora, Oravice, provide a lot of opportunities for attractive hiking and cycling trips. There is a thermal swimming pool at Oravice with warm water of 32 - 36 degrees of Celsius, which is open all year. And there are more places like these all over the country, just come and find out!!!
