Bratislava Castle

The imposing silhouette of Bratislava Castle, which is familiar to people throughout the Slovak Republic, can hardly escape the attention of visitors of the capital city Bratislava. The castle is situated on the hill over the river Danube and its visitors can enjoy the view over the Old Town and the newer quarters of the city, as well as the surrounding peaks of Male Karpaty - the Small Carpathians and the Danube disappearing into the distance. There are also fine exhibitions from three different museums - archaeology, history and music, which is also the part of Slovak National Museum.

The most recommended exhibition is Kamenny svedok - the Stone Witness - of the Archaeology Museum. It is situated in premises below the Castle's court of honor - Cestne nadvorie. Visitors can learn about the Castle's history here. The most prized finds from Slovakia are in renovated medieval premises on the ground floor. For instance Jewels of Slovakia's Distant Past - Klenoty davnej minulosti Slovenska. The oldest exhibit is a female figure from ivory known as the Venus of Moravany, dating back approximately 24 000 years.

The History Museum takes the whole three floors. Entrance is via the ceremonial Theresan staircase. It was built during the rule of Maria Theresa. The most famous exhibitions are Memories of the Craft Trades, The Silver Treasury of the History Museum, Historical Furniture and Historical Clocks. The furniture and clocks are from the 15th to beginning of 20th century. Visitors can also find a lot of art works and items of applied art.

The Music Museum has an exhibition of Indian musical instruments in the antechamber of the Music Hall. The Lugisland bastion, near Mikulas - Nicholas - Gate, houses an exhibition of Slovak folk instruments under the title Dedicstvo hudobnych nastrojov, The Heritage of Musical Instruments.

Besides all these three most visited museums of Bratislava Castle there are also other things and places to the interest of visitors. There are also premises, which belong to the meetings of the members of government - Narodna rada - of the Slovak Republic. Visitors can also spend some time on the Leopoldov's Square or take some break in the Castle's Wine Bar. This is a nice a place to spend a day for your trip and also to learn more about Slovak History.
