Folklore Festivals© Katarina Cadrova
My previous articles were from collection of folklore musueums and tradition in Slovak Republic. I would like to close this session with my last article about folklore festivals. They are not very common all over the world. Every country has its own style of music besides the all world known songs.
In Slovakia folk music became part of the tradition of folklore. In old days people used to work very hard and in their free time after work they loved to meet and they sang, danced their own songs and played musical wooden instruments, especially violins, which were made by hands.
Nowadays people still sing and play folk songs, but not as much as they used to. The presentation of folk songs and activities tourists can see during the folklore festivals, which start in February and usually end at the end of October every year. Sometimes they last over a week and there are a lot of various kinds of performance or entertainment for visitors. The center of folklore festivals is in the little village Terchova, in the north of Slovakia. There were many musicians born and tourists can meet them at the international folk festival " Janosikove Dni ", which is always organized at the end of July and at the beginning of August. This is the biggest musical festival in Slovakia. Between the most famous and visited ones also belong childrens` competition of folklore singing " Slavici Kysuc " - Kysuce Nightingales, Childrens`Folklore Festival at Hont in Dudince. The regional festival of childrens`performance of traditional songs " Spievanky pod Polanou " - A sing a song bellow Polana in Detva. They usually last for 2 or 3 days. Also 47th year of Slovakia`s leading festival traditional and folk culture which welcomes participiants from abroad this year in Vychodna.
