Skiing Trips

Winter in Slovakia starts at the end of November sometimes earlier and lasts until at the end of March or April. The temperature in the northern parts of the country often rises 15 F and during the nights even 5 F or less. The roads are often very icy and everything is covered with snow. From my own experiences I know this is the best time of the year for those, who enjoy winter sports. Besides ice rinks, which are in almost every town, and playing ice hockey or figure skating, there are around 85 big ski resorts for downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, sledging and snowboarding.

The most visited resorts are in the biggest mountains Vysoke Tatry - High Tatras, Nizke Tatry - Low Tatras a Zapadne Tatry - Western Tatras http://www.eunet.sk/slovakia/tatra-mount... , situated in the north of the country. Every year a lot of Slovaks and tourists from Poland, Russia, Hungary, Czech Republic and also skiing lovers from western Europe, Germany, Austria or France travel to spend their winter vacation in this fascinating places. There are a lot of ski tows and ski-platforms for experts and beginners, too. The ski resorts like Strbske Pleso, Stary Smokovec, Tatranska Lomnica, Jasna Dolina Valley usually have 35 inches of snow or more and skiing conditions are very good.

Also Velka Fatra is famous for ski resorts Donovaly, Malino Brdo, Jasenska Dolina, Sachticky in Spania Dolina Valley, an old mining area that was proclaimed a historical legacy reserve of folk culture and architecture and Kraliky, an attractive scenery for cross-country skiers. Some ski resorts of Kremnicke Vrchy Hills became a world wide known by organizing World Championships and international cross-country skiing races. The World Championships in Cross-country Ski Orienteering in Skalka, and the White Trace of the Slovak National Uprising, a 55 km/34 mile long trail for cross-country skiers.

There are even smaller ski areas where tourists spend a day or two skiing or just enjoying the wonderful view of the countryside in winter. Those places are usually less crowded than the bigger ones and people stay in private cottages or family houses.
