All We Could Give Was Thanks

Nov 20, 2002 - © Sandy McCollum

I can't forget that year, and I still wonder who it was that put us on that tree. Maybe it was the same person who delivered a cord of wood when we were asleep? Could it have been the person who left a bed on our stairs when we didn't have enough? Maybe it was our neighbors, our friends who'd bought gifts for every person in our whole family?

I don't know. All I do know is that they really made a difficult time better for a family who tried not to bother others with their toils, and who would have gone without on that cold, workless Christmas, and had only salmon loaf to eat - again.

I hope someday I can do this for a family. When someone does something so wonderful for you like that, it wakens any sleeping generosity forgotten about in an effort to eek out an existence of daily life. Those nice neighbors moved away and we don't see them anymore, but each year, I can't help but think of them. I probably always will.

Good Journeys!
