What Am I?

I saw my friend in the store last Wednesday and she had no costume on, though I knew she'd be attending a party later that night. I asked her what she was going to be and she told me she was already dressed. I hadn't noticed anything different about her, no costume that I could acknowledge, so I asked what she'd meant. Her costume was so obvious that I just couldn't see it - she was dressed as her Aunt Rose!

I met up with another man who had on hospital surgery garb, cowboy boots and hat and a Budweiser buckle on his belt. I asked him who he was and he enthusiastically responded, "I'm Doctor Captain Cowboy Craig!" Must have been a storybook character I'd missed as a kid... Halloween is so fun, I just love all the humor and imagination and some costumes are so good that you can't even tell who it is under it.

This year, Halloween was no different than any other. Everywhere I went people looked me up and down before smiling and saying, "Happy Halloween!" People watched me and offered compliments such as, "Nice Costume!" Some even asked who'd made my great costume for me. This happens every year, and only on Halloween, of course. But, there's something wrong with this picture.

I didn't dress up and those are my clothes, not my costume! I dress like that every single day - really!

I love buckskin and natural materials, and I adore fringe. I wear three styles (and colors) of moccasins and they all have fringe, even my boots. In my waist-length hair I wear a fox's foot beaded onto a barrette, or a leather thong wrapped around my ponytail. I wear bone, bead and ivory jewelry along with my medicine bag, which is made of a small turtle shell. When I'm not in blue jeans I can be found wearing a long skirt over leggings, which, I believe is much warmer and more comfy than any pair of pants I can put on.

I don't just dress this way, it's a whole lifestyle with me. I do like and use many modern conveniences, but I prefer to put only natural things in and on my body. I still have a few vices to break (I smoke) but for the most part, I'm pretty Earthy. I would be prefectly happy living in a sod hut in the wilderness, if only my husband will watch a few more reruns of Gilligan's Isle first, so he can figure out how to get my hair-dryer running on coconuts, vines and bamboo - only, he'll have to convert it to Spruce roots, pine cones and forget-me-nots.
