Treatments for RLS?

There is no cure for RLS though the symptoms in Secondary RLS can be alleviated with various treatments. The following are some suggestions that you might consider. In all cases, consult your doctor for professional advice on what drugs and treatments to use.

Drugs

There is at yet no cure for primary RLS but in the case of secondary, relief is possible with some dopamine drugs. If iron deficiency is thought to be a cause of secondary RSL, then taking vitamin or mineral supplements containing iron, vitamin B or folate may help to alleviate the symptoms. Studies have found that iron helps produce dopamine, a chemical that occurs naturally in the brain. Be careful to taking too many minerals such as iron, magnesium, potassium, and calcium, can interfere with the body's ability to effectively use other minerals and could cause toxicity. Always ask your doctor for advice on taking mineral supplements.

Non-drug treatments for RLS

There are some non-drug treatments that are helpful in reducing and relieving most RLS symptoms when they strike. A good massage and the application of cold or hot compresses to your effected limb can provide some temporary relief. Take a walk. Do some stretching. Take a hot or cold bath. Use a vibrator on the effective limb. Practice relaxation techniques such as biofeedback, meditation, or yoga. If you are seated for a long time such as when you are travelling, keep your mind off your condition by distracting yourself. Read a gripping novel. Do some intricate needlework. Play video games. All these activities may help reduce or relieve your symptoms but remember that they are only temporary help and not a cure.

Things to Avoid

There are some medications such as anti-nausea medications, some cold and allergy medications, major tranquilizers, anti-seizure medication and medications used to treat depression that can make RLS worse. If you are seeing a doctor for other ailments, and you suffer from RLS, make sure your doctor is aware of your RLS.

Non-medical substances that should be avoided are caffeine-containing products, including chocolate and caffeinated beverages such as coffee, tea, and soft drinks, alcohol and nicotine
