The American Skin

Truly, never before have I seen Americans together scream, cry, morn, pray, work, give and unite as one. Is this the same patriotism, courage, and bravery I have so often heard my grandparents reminisce? It seemed like such a far away time and place they spoke of. Not knowing what the future would hold, but knowing above all else, they were united fighting for the good and the righteous.

My paternal grandfather was 30 when he volunteered as a chaplain in the US Navy. My maternal grandfather was a naval doctor in the South Seas with MacArthur. My husband's grandfather was 17 when he was left for dead on the USS California at Pearl Harbor. These were the men we were raised to be proud of and to look at in awe of their fearlessness, heroism and love of country. I have so often heard how thankful I should be for not knowing such trying times.

Well, now we do. Just like our grandparents, we don't know what the future holds, but we do know that we are fighting for the good and the righteous. Patriotism is the sister of faith- believing in something you can't see, but knowing with your whole heart it is truth. We have inherited patriotism, courage and bravery from those who came before us. Our hour has come, our patriotism and faith is steady, and the American skin is resilient, impervious and tough.

"Righteousness exalts a nation" Proverbs 14:34
