In the future, genetic-based treatments may involve a topical ointment that blocks protein synthesis from causing a skin reaction. Vaccinations are presently being formulated for treating psoriasis. Treatments may one day in the near future be customized for each individual depending on his or her genetic make-up. This is where gene therapy enters into the picture. In short, by targeting the specific genes in a patient that code for psoriasis, the DNA code can be interrupted and prevented from transcribing the proteins responsible for psoriasis. Even actual gene replacement is not out of the question. The future of gene therapy undoubtedly is unlimited and full of possibilities!
