Depending on the type and severity of psoriasis, patients can experience severe joint pain, skin blistering and oozing, inflamed skin irritation, and even hair loss. (Next month, we will delve into the types of psoriasis and discuss the SAPASI, Self-Administered Psoriasis Area and Severity Index.) This constant agony leads to feelings of hopelessness, depression, and isolation.
Some patients with severe psoriasis worry how they appear to the rest of society, and begin to avoid social situations. Others are simply tired of their medications staining their clothes and not treating their conditions. It is important to know that all of these feelings are perfectly normal and common among the psoriasis community. A newsgroup devoted soley to the topic of psoriasis is at news:alt.support.skin-diseases.psoriasis..
Next month we will turn our focus to the types of psoriasis, current treatment options and exciting new therapies on the horizon. For today, know you are not alone and do not lose HOPE.
