The multitude of natural therapies available today for treating all of our various aches and pains is overwhelming. Weeding through the endless herbal products, vitamin supplements, natural oils and natural "everything" available on the Internet confuses even the most adept web surfer. Finding a suitable alternative atopic eczema treatment is no different.
In the past two articles in my series on Atopic Eczema, I have covered the causes, symptoms and medical treatments commonly associated with this skin condition. In this article I am highlighting the best alternative natural therapies I have found on the Internet. My intent is not to endorse any of these products, but simply make the information readily available to you. I also recommend conferring with your doctor before trying any therapy, especially if you are taking prescription medication, pregnant, or nursing. 1. EMU OIL- http://www.javelinacreek.com - Natural emu oil therapy treats not only eczema, but psoriasis, rhinitis, rosacea, keloids, diaper rash, diabetes, and arthritis to name a few. The oil is available as an extract, hand cream, body lotion, face cream, hair care products and even a pain cream. These are reasonably priced products with apparent consumer satisfaction and no known side effects. 2. NEEM - http://www.theoriginalneemcompany.com - Neem is a tree from India that has been used for 4500 years for medicinal purposes. People utilize the leaves, bark, root, fruit and seeds for various therapies including eczema. It is noted for having anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal properties. This product however is not approved by the FDA for medical treatment, but is found in daily products such as soaps, shampoos, and toothpaste. 3. BREWER'S YEAST - An age-old cure for many of life's ailments, brewer's yeast is a well-known source of protein, B vitamins, chromium (regulates blood sugar), and phosphorus. Several studies do suggest that this nutritional supplement aids in treating not only eczema, but also diabetes, hypoglycemia, fatigue, high cholesterol (raises HDL), and constipation. Brewer's yeast is available in tablet form and is best taken on an empty stomach. This therapy is not recommended for people who have a yeast infection, high blood levels of uric acid, gout, or are allergic to molds. There are numerous Internet sites supplying brewer's yeast, and it can also be found in your local drugstore. 4. CALENDULA - http://www.mothernature.com -This flowering plant (Calendula officinalis) has been used for centuries for ailments ranging from scorpion bites to cancer. It was once even a common staple in foods. The most recent application, however, usually involves skin ailments and irritations including atopic eczema. Laboratory tests support calendula's healing benefits. The anti-inflammatory also claims antiviral properties. Calendula is available as a cream and salve and has no known side effects.
