For all the Suite101 members in the Canadian West and those who plan to visit in the near future, here are two brief descriptions of the great places to SPRING SKI at:
Lake Louise Ski area and the village of Lake Louise are located in Banff National Park, approximately 115 miles (184 Kms) west of Calgary, Alberta, and 36 miles (60 Kms) west of the town of Banff. Lake Louise is the largest ski area in Canada with 4,000 acres of skiable terrain. With four mountain faces to choose from, it takes most more than a week to explore all of Lake Louise. The mountain's terrain offers a perfect mix for every ability level. Every chairlift at Lake Louise has an easy and a hard way down, which means that even a novice can enjoy the whole mountain, including the back bowls, and if the weather turns unfriendly, there are many miles of tree-lined runs. A variety of cross-country ski trails are available for all ability levels, plus 50 miles of track-set trails and access to the rustic Skoki Lodge in the mountain backcountry. The scenery here is unsurpassed. Lake Louise is constantly ranked #1 by ski magazine readers for scenery. Stop for a moment at the summit of Mt. Whitehorn on a sun-drenched day with the panoramic vista of jagged, glaciated peaks, impossibly turquoise lakes and endless, untouched forests. Food and warm shelter are never far away. You can take your pick from three separate day lodges strategically located throughout the area. The Whiskyjack base lodge alone features a children's nursery and day care center, rental shop, ski school, ski shop, locker area, drop-off zone and plenty of free parking. The Village of Lake Louise offers all the amenities, with enough variety to suit every taste and pocketbook. Nine hotels operate year-round, and the aprFs-ski scene has come of age. Lake Louise offers a full spectrum of dining, partying and entertainment options. Lake Louise is a scant two hour drive from Calgary International Airport, and airline deregulation has provided Calgary with innumerable direct or one-stop flights from most U.S. and world centers. Sunshine offers over 2,200 acres of beginner, intermediate and expert terrain that will satisfy all abilities of skiers and snowboarders. Goat's Eye Mountain boasts 1,900 vertical feet of powder and groomed runs. It can be accessed by a high-speed detachable quad in just 5 minutes.
