I got my mail today, and it really made me mad. I had the usual assortment of bills, junk mail, and catalogs. One of the catalogs was from Lane Bryant.
Now, any of you who are plus sized must know Lane Bryant. It's often the only store for larger women in your mall. Their catalog department is technically not related to the walk in stores, however. The catalogs themselves are lovely. They have beautiful women on the cover, wearing attractive clothes. The only problem is, none of the models are fat. In fact, none of them are even plus sized. It is extremely unlikely that these women would even need to wear the smallest size Lane Bryant carries, usually a 12-14. The Powers That Be at Lane Bryant and their sister company, Roamans, say that fat women like looking at their clothes on "attractive women." Yet they do not choose to consider that fat women can be attractive themselves. The fact is, catalog shopping is much more difficult when you don't know how a particular item will look on a person of size. In a store, you can try it on, or even see it on the sales person, if she is of size to wear it. Not in a catalog, unless the models employed are truly plus sized. Luckily, there are catalogs with real plus sized, and even super sized models. Some of them are available online. A very extensive list can be found in the "Clothing FAQs" in both alt.support.big-folks, and soc.support.size acceptance.
