Golden Girls Make the Golden Years Something to Look Forward To

If I knew I would be able to live my life in my golden years like the comedy show, The Golden Girls, I would be looking forward to growing old. Unfortunately, television does not depict real life. I am in my early thirties and my friends tell me I have always had a wise ass sarcastic sense of humor, much like Bea Arthur's character Dorothy Zbornak. Her wit, body language, and reactions to her fellow cast mates shows how talented and brilliant this actress is. In an episode I watched recently, Blanche made her usual comments about how beautiful and irresistble she is to men. Dorothy's sarcastic come back was, "Not to mention endless irritating too." In another episode where the three women were taking a cruise with their male companions Blanche suggested that they take some protection with them. Of course Rose was completely confused. Dorothy was trying to be discreet but by the time Rose said, "A Nestle Crunch bar?" Dorothy yelled out at the top of her lungs right in the middle of the store in front of the entire public, "Condoms Rose Condoms!!!!!" Then the check out clerk had to have a price check, embarrassing the girls further. That was one of my favorite episodes.

Betty White who has been on several sitcoms throughout her career can play any role that is given to her with such expertise that your mind actually believes she is a totally different person in each role. Her role on the sitcom, Mamma's Family, was the stuck up selfish daughter Ellen who was not so innocent and somewhat mean spirited. This role was originally created on The Carol Burnett Show. On the Mary Tyler Moore show she played the conceited cooking show host Sue Ellen. Each role differed and her role on Golden Girls as Rose Nylund shows the diversity this actress has. Her total innocence and sometimes stupid nature and her St.Olaf stories are irresistible and crazy. In every episode she is slammed with sarcasm and rude comments and she is so naive she doesn't even realize this.

Rue McClanahan gives the role of Blanche Devereaux a sophistication that no other actress could bring. On the outside she is conceited and constantly tells of her sexual exploits with men. Deep down inside she has a good heart and avoids commitment because she still hurts from the loss of her husband.
