Countdown

The Christmas countdown is speeding up. If you’re like me you promised yourself last year that you wouldn’t leave everything to the last minute. Now here we are rushing to malls, parties, baking, decorating, wrapping gifts. Most single parents are too busy already, so I have a compiled a list of tips for saving time. Christmas is supposed to be about being with family. Keeping priorities in check may make Christmas even more wonderful with time spent enjoying the season, not preparing for it.

 Buying gifts online may seem frightening at first but the time it saves could be well worth it. The only caution is to find out first what shipping methods are used by the store and double check on exactly how long before you receive your purchase.

 Holding an open house can be another great way to save time. If you have a lot of visiting to do, getting everyone together in one place could be fun and only takes one day; visiting 15 people separately could take a week.

 Keep Christmas baking simple. If you must bake, pick mixes or uncomplicated recipes. Visiting a bake sale at a church or school takes very little time while baking for 20 could take days. If baking is important, put it before outdoor lights or homemade ornaments.

 Instead of wrapping, choose gift bags. I think a single parent invented these bags. Popping a gift in a bag with some pretty paper only takes a minute and looks fabulous. Always save bags that you receive to use the next year.

 Combine family night with a Christmas activity. Making ornaments, stringing popcorn, or putting up lights can be done by the whole family; get it done while spending time together.

 When sending Christmas Cards this year consider sending e-cards. You can design one or two different cards for everyone in a few minutes as opposed to filling out each one individually.

 Never turn down a good invitation for Christmas dinner. If friends or relatives invite you for dinner, it would be a huge time saver. If you feel bad for saving so much time, offer to make dessert or show up early to help.

 Be organized before you go to the mall. They are going to be full and shopping can take longer than normal, so know what you are looking for. Keep a list of items so you don’t forget gifts or things you need; instead of making three or four trips try to limit it to one.
